Squarespace: Give an iPhone, Get Awareness

On June 8th Squarespace launched an awareness campaign on Twitter; 30 iPhones, one awarded per day to anyone who attached #squarespace to a tweet.

A simple awareness campaign that took Squarespace from 1,393 followers at the start, to 25,593 followers and growing, 5 days later.

When I heard about the contest on the 8th (through Twitter, no less) I visited Twitterholic to have a 3rd party document Squarespace's stats. Why? Because I knew the campaign was going to be successful.

Create Awareness; Not Ads

That statement should sound familiar because it is the title of a previous post.

Social media is a great way to spread the word quickly. How's 25,000 confirmed followers? That count does not include the people who read the tweets but decided not to follow Squarespace. 

All for the price of 30 iPhones, or about $6000. And there are 25 more days to go.

If you have a great product, it sells itself

Is there a pitch? Hell to the no.

Awareness campaigns do not work if they are centered around a pitch. Squarespace already offers a great product - the campaign's purpose is to bring awareness to that product's existence.

One Minor Critique

Squarespace needs to follow back. Currently Squarespace has 25,718 followers but only follows 10.

Remember, social media is not anyone's megaphone. 

How is Squarespace going to leverage the success of this campaign AFTER the contest? People will only tune them out if the conversation turns one-sided.

In the midst of such success, Squarespace must anticipate engaging followers on Twitter after the close of the contest. And, as a Squarespace customer myself, I would like to know that they want to hear what I have to say.

After all, I'm only human - so be human.
