Yes-Men (and Women): A No-No for Companies

We have all worked with, or for that matter worked for that person; the spineless, butt-kissing, lapdog of the higher-ups. We may have ask ourselves, "why would they agree to that - don't they see what I see?" Or, we might even pose the question to them directly, only to hear, "that's the way it is."
As frustrating as they are to you, they are even more dangerous to the company, as the trained yes-person with the inability to say 'no' can lead management down a dangerous path.
Disservice to Employees
We know the scenario; unhappy employees, continuously driven to disappointment by the company they toil for. While middle management can prevent this scenario, a 'yes-person' in middle management will continue the viscious cycle that erodes an employees' morale, leading to dissatisfaction, lower production and lower retention.
Disservice to Customers
Middle managers also serve as the lynch-pin of knowledge between the upper and lower echelons of the company. Where the upper level is the store house of directional knowledge, the lower is the storehouse of 'latent' knowledge.
This 'latent' knowledge is what upper managers need for insights to continually provide improvement to strategy. With a spineless middle manager, this knowledge will remain unknown to upper management, inevitably leading to half-informed decisions and dissatisfied customers.
Disservice to Yourself
If you find yourself acting as a 'yes-person,' ask yourself
a) if you are happy
b) if you feel free to offer your opinion
c) if you were to offer your opinion, would someone listen
If you answered 'no' to any of these, you should reconsider your current employment. Continuing in that state will prove to only be a disservice to you.
Solution - Encourage Speaking-Up
I'm not advocating the support of an employee coup; but to ensure proper feedback from all employees, management must not stifle opinions and observations when offered. In many cases, opinions may need to be encouraged.
To encourage opinions is to allow invaluable feedback to drive improvements within your company.
Empowering your middle management will also bolster their confidence. Confidence will then lead to better leadership in the role each manager assumes.
We all love to hear yes, but not at the expense of sound leadership.
Remember, your employees are human; so be human.
